A Child Dies Every 45 Minutes in Gaza: How Many More Before Peace?
GAZA CITY — In what human rights experts now describe as the deadliest campaign against children in modern warfare, Israel has killed at least 17,400 children in Gaza since October 7, 2023 — an average of one child every 45 minutes.
Among the dead:
825 babies, not yet one
3,266 toddlers, aged 2–5
4,032 children, aged 6–10
3,646 middle schoolers, who survived three previous wars
2,949 teenagers, never allowed to dream into adulthood
Thousands more are still buried under rubble.
“They Are Not Collateral”
Earlier this month, within just 36 hours, Israeli forces launched 100 simultaneous airstrikes, killing 183 children.
One of them was one-year-old Mohammed Abu Hilal, who died with his pregnant mother in what was designated a “safe zone.”
His father wept:
“Oh, my dear son, go up to heaven. You’ll find all your toys up there.”
This tragedy repeats in tents, shelters, and shattered homes across Gaza — where grief is relentless, and no place is truly safe.
A Holy Land Without Peace
Despite the devastation, both Jewish and Muslim scriptures offer powerful messages calling for peace:
Hebrew – “בקש שלום ורדפהו”
“Seek peace and pursue it.” — Psalm 34:15
“Repel evil with what is better.” — Qur’an 41:34
“Great is peace, for all blessings are contained in it.” — Midrash Rabbah
“Peace is one of the names of God.” — Hadith Qudsi
Qur’an 8:61 – “وَإِن جَنَحُوا لِلسَّلْمِ فَاجْنَحْ لَهَا”
“If they incline toward peace, you should also incline toward it.”
“He who shames his fellow in public has no share in the world to come.”
The Numbers Tell a Grim Story
30+ children killed every day for over 500 days
1 in 3 children under two is acutely malnourished
10 child amputations daily, often without anesthesia
1 toilet for every 220 people, 1 shower for every 4,500
500–700 Palestinian children detained annually, some as young as 12
In hospitals, the label WCNSF appears frequently:
“Wounded Child, No Surviving Family”
Israeli media reframes these deaths. The deceased are called “terrorists.” Names and ages are rarely shared.
Journalist Orly Noy writes:
“The media has adopted the idea that there are no innocents in Gaza.”
This is not a lack of journalism — it’s a calculated information war.
What Kind of Future Are We Creating?
Children without legs. Babies without milk. Schools erased. Orphans without names.
Talmud Sanhedrin 37a — “Whoever destroys a soul, it is as if he destroyed an entire world.”
Qur’an 5:32 — “Whoever saves a life, it is as if he had saved all mankind.”
The choice is before us.
True peace won’t come from airstrikes or siege. It must come from action:
Lift the blockade on Gaza
Allow full humanitarian access
End collective punishment
Recognize Palestinian dignity and statehood
Hold all violators of international law accountable
Support peacebuilders on both sides
The children of Gaza are not soldiers. They are not statistics.
They are stories that were never told. Dreams that were never fulfilled.
In the words of ancient prophets and sacred tongues:
Shalom. Salaam. Peace.
Not just a word — a responsibility.
Not just a word — a responsibility.
